the bots and the trolls are thrashing my site. I am spending time nearly every day deleting comments and banning new ip who leave links to viagra, mortgages, or worse. the good news is that this means that the search engines are indexing me for more words.

Obviously, it likens to the unflattering image of the little monster, but did its usage in blogdom derive from "trolling" - i.e. looking for something to bash - or something similar?
Anyone know?
