Read about the Denver woman who refused to show ID on a public bus, and is about to be arraigned. Have we seen the end of the 4th and 5th Amendments?
Attention Conservatives: this is why we have an ACLU. Do you have your papers ready to show the police with you at all times?
Madness!
Posted by Jake Allen at December 5, 2005 10:07 PMHey Jake
I was reading this post and was thinking: wow I think I'm kind of agreeing with you on a "political" issue. and that's something that doesn't really happen that often.
In the Netherlands (in which i live :)) It is mandatory to show your ID if someone from the police asks you since January 2005. this is because of security reasons(they say) so if they suspect you of being a terrorist, they can just ask you. but they don’t need a viable reason. so if you're not doing anything illegal(like for instance smoking marihuana, protesting or gathering or other things) you could be fined with a maximum of €200(~$230) or even taken to jail for 2 months for not showing your ID or passport.
I have to say that this kind of thing doesn't really happen all that often that someone gets fine for it but it has happened.
another weird thing about this law is that if you're younger than 15 years. you don’t have to show you’re ID. but how are you going to prove you're under 15 and don’t need an ID if you're not carrying one. there have been people that have been fined for not showing their ID while they where younger than 15.
So this is one of the things that makes the US great but still: Home sweet home, for all the other things that make Holland much greater(in its own way)
Greeting from The Netherlands.
Bart Janssen
P.s. say hi to your family for me.
Bart, you rock. I'll tell the crew "Hallo" from you!
Cheers!
